2013 is surely going down in the records books as one of the wettest years in a long time. This year so far as had more awesome rafting than any I can remember in the last 35 years of rafting on the Upper Yough. Just when the water starts to come down to summer levels we get a giant blast of rain and were back to spring levels. More days were spent this year on the river with incredible class 5 conditions then we’ve seen since the beginning. At these levels the Upper really comes into its own, a ture whitewater gem.
This year the Upper Yough was also recognized as one of the top ten raft trips in North America. Precision Rafting was the number one outfitter. This year has been a special one so far. I’ve beeen paddling the river since 1977 and have never seen a year like this. We still have great natural flow at the end of August. If high water is your thing than this is the year.
As the summer season winds down we head into fall with lots of rain in the forecast. It seems like its been raining every 3rd day, and I’m not complaining. We still have lots of the season left with some special dam releases on the Savage and North Branch so please try and take advantage of the very special season. Who knows when this will happen again.
The summer heat is cooking up the action on the Youghiogheny!! The Yough (pronounced "Yok") is dam released guaranteeing great whitewater action. The dam releases every Friday and Monday. Starting on June 23rd the dam will begin releasing Saturdays. Making it a three day whitewater weekend! Our Saturday trips are quite popular so if your thing is to escape the crowds we would recommend catching the Monday or Friday release.
If high action isn't your thing, the releases open up some beautiful sections of river. Take the entire family out for quality time on the river. On Fridays, (soon to be) Saturdays, and Mondays, we have two float trips; either in the morning or in the afternoon. The morning float starts below the Deep Creek Dam and flows through the gorgeous Yough canyon. In the afternoon, we float from Friendsville down to the Yough Lake. Enjoy a few riffles, swimming, and beautiful scenery. Both of these float trips are a great way to introduce young kids to the joys of the outdoors. With the bountiful wild life you are almost guaranteed to spot some kind of critter.
Awesome day on the Savage river. This trip never disappoints, with solid class 3-4 whitewater for 5 miles and road side shuttle this is a true gem in the whitewater world. We started the day with some chilling news of downed trees in the bigger rapids and certain doom if we did not remove them. So off to work with the chain saw and 2 hrs later the trees were gone and the fun began again. We were able to complete two runs before 2:00 pm even with the delay for the logging operation and what a great day we had. Beautiful sunshine and warm temps were enjoyed be all.
The next release is scheduled for July 1 2012 so mark your calendars and give us a call as this is one of the best wave ride trips in the area and sure to be one you won't soon forget. With only 3 releases per season you have to catch this one when it happens.
Give us a call 800 477 3723 and we will deliver a great day on the river.
