The Savage River

Class: 3-4
Gradient: 75 per mile
Volume: 850 -1200 cfs
Season: April through October
Scenery: Wild and Scenic
Time: 2-3 hrs
Length: 5.5 Miles

The Savage river is a classic whitewater run. This is one of the more appropriately named rivers you will ever run.  The Savage is small but action packed. From start to finish it is non stop class 2-4 whitewater for 5 miles. The Savage is a small stream that really gets going like a wild river when they open up the Savage River reservoir for a whitewater release. This section of the Savage was the home of the 1988 and 1989 World Kayak and Canoe Championships. The first 2.5 miles has most of the big action. The last 2.5 mile the river still keeps moving but the rapids are more class 2-3. This is a hard one to catch but we have worked out a scheduled  of release weekends for guaranteed times in July,  August, and September. In the Early spring and after big rain events can find the Savage running too.  This one is so much fun you may want to run it twice.
