The river section above the dam for the Upper Yough. Another natural flow trip that is very special. The Top Yough is raft in the R-2 format with just one guide to one guest. We do this in the puma's for max action. Imagine starting the trip with a big 30 ft sliding waterfall. We scout this one and you can raft over it. This is also so a low water high action IK (duckies) trip for the most adventurous. We can do this trip before or after the Upper Yough to make a full day of rafting. This trip takes you into one of the most beautiful parks in Maryland, Swallow Falls State Park. Virgin hemlock forest dominate the landscape for the next several miles, although you will to busy to look around it is highly reccommended. This trip includes all rafting equipment and shuttles.
These trips are the next level for the rafter who has really done it all and wants to go to that next level. Not your typical whitewater trip as we do these trips on rivers that don't get rafted all the time. These rivers are the very special places that we would go on our days off and usually they are in more of the remote areas that are still left. Wilderness trips with no crowds and done in small groups and small boats. You won't find a more exciting trip then one of these with breath taking scenery and exhilerating action, big rapids and powerful currents these river trips will truley test your skills. Most of these rivers are natural flow and depend on mother nature so check the guage page and the weather then give us a call to see whats up.
When all other river might be to high are you want to give extreme IK's (duckies) a try this is where we go. Bear Creek from start to finish is a non stop slalom run with little let up. We do this trip when ever the conditions are just right. We usually R-2 this run so you really get an up front a personal view of the creek. Using the small Puma rafts Bear Creek comes alive.
This is the most remote, most scenic and the most challenging whitewater in Northern West Virginia. The banks are choked with laurel, making scouting and portaging very difficult. Rafting the Big Sandy was pioneered by PRE. We do this trip in the 4 person rafts and all rafts are guided with safety boaters watching and helping along the way. You get a full day of wilderness rafting from start to finish. Just after going under the steel bridge at Rockville the river is class 2-3 for about 1 mile and then there are two big ledges just above Wonder Falls where the bottom drops out. We portage around Wonder Falls.
Below the falls there are several big rapids in a pool drop fashion. The first one is the Undercut Rock, about a six foot high river wide ledge. This is followed by Zoom flume which is about a 12' high sliding ledge with big holes at the bottom. Then comes Little Splat which is a long ledge/boulder rapid just two short drops above Big Splat, a must portage Falls. A swim here is not recommended. Below Big Splat the river changes to more of a continouos boulder run with some big rapids and ledges thrown in to keep you on your toes. For the next 3 miles the Big Sandy is nonstop action all the way to the take out. In this section the river drops around 80 ft per mile.this is great river bogey water spiced up with a few big drops to keep it real.
Depending on water levels and or abilities you can run all sections or break it up in to two different trips. You can keep track of water levels by checking the river gauges on our web site, look for the Rockville gauge reading to be around 5.5' - 7.0' for the best run.
The Kitzmiller section of the Potomac is a classic early spring run with more hydraulics and big rapids then any other run in the area. This section is nicknamed the land of a 1000 hydrualics. Early spring rains make this trip as wild as the Gauley with no flat water pools. Big ledges creating powerful hydraulics and long wave trains are the norm for this trip. Action all the way. This is a classic trip that you won't soon forget. We do this trip in the 4 person rafts depending on water levels. We guide every raft and have extra safety with safety kayakers. We supply all rafting equipment and shuttles to and from the river. A deli style lunch is included with cold beverages. This is one of those trips that when you are done you can't wait to do it again.
